To build an arrow spine tester is not like brain surgery, it just seems that way.

With the correct plans, tools, time, and cash, almost anyone can learn how to build an arrow spine tester. We experimented for several weeks to find the right combination of parts. It would seem that the local chain hardware stores would be able to provide everything needed to build anything imaginable, but that was not the case.

Before we begin, get a mug of your favorite beverage, and a comfortable chair. Then read on to see if you would like to build your own spine tester.

The wood available from the chain stores, although acceptable for some people, is not as top quality as they would have you to believe to build an arrow spine tester. For wood that is supposed to be kiln dried, we found most of the pieces to be too warped or crooked to be of use for what we needed. We obtain our wood from a specialty wood project shop and have it custom milled.

WE NOW TAKE Pay Pal !! FOR SOME OF THE ITEMS THAT WE STOCK AND SELL. SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED TO AVAILABILITY.

THE FOR SALE!! LINK WILL TAKE YOU TO THE ENTRY PAGE FOR THE ITEMS THAT WE HAVE FOR SALE.

THE PAY PAL LINK WILL TAKE YOU TO A FORM WHERE YOU TELL US WHAT YOU WANT, HOW MANY, WHAT COLOR, AND SO FORTH.

WHEN WE GET YOUR REQUEST, WE WILL BE SURE THAT THE ITEMS ARE AVAILABLE AND SEND YOU AN INVOICE AND PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS BY EMAIL.

YOU MUST HAVE A PAY PAL ACCOUNT FOR THIS CONVIENENCE. WE ONLY GET YOUR ORDER, NOT YOUR FINANCIAL INFORMATION.

Let's start with the plans. Without a plan to build an arrow spine tester, the project is doomed before it starts. You are the person that will be using self made arrow spine tester, so the plan must be satisfactory to you. You must decide which style of tester you want.

Will it be of the Dial Indicator type, the Protractor type, the Cantilever type, or some other type? The choice is yours to make so research the different types to see which is best for your needs. Remember, you must have a plan to build an arrow spine tester.

We feel that the Dial Indicator type is the most accurate. The fact that the deflection can be measured to .001 of and inch is hard to argue with. That is why we (Archers-Friend Spine Testers) decided on this type to offer to bow hunters and archers in general. We have not seen another dial indicator type offered commercially.

The Protractor type is the most common of arrow spine testers and they are quite impressive due to the fact they are so large and take up so much space. The complaints we hear about these type of testers are usually that of inaccuracy at some point in the arc of the protractor and/or the high cost.

The Cantilever type is supposed to work although we have never seen one. If you have an engineering background or know a mechanical engineer, perhaps you can get them to design one for you. The formula for calculating the spine must be correct or you will be in for a terrible surprise.
Choosing the type of tester is the first part of having a plan, the second part is knowing the formula to use in calculating the spine.

The next thing to consider in making your plan is which formula for determining the spine should you use?

There are different thoughts as to what is the correct formula and only you can decide which one to use.
The formula determines the size of arrow spine tester, the amount of weight to place on the shaft, and where to place the weight. You may want to check with your local bow shop, bow hunting buddies, or your shaft supplier to determine which formula is best for your purpose. Some formulas use 26 inch centers, some use 28 inch centers. Some formulas use 1.94 lbs. of weight and some use 2.0 lbs. of weight.

The Cantilever stylewould be even different. Having a plan to build an arrow spine tester lets you make a sketch of you tester and make the material list for your project. With the plan, design type, sketch, and materials on hand, you are ready for the next step, making a tools list to see if there are any that you will need to build an arrow spine tester.

You may think that common tools found around the average home is all that would be needed for a project such as this. We can tell you from experience that the normal cordless drill, yard stick ruler, jig saw, 10 piece drill bit set, and orbital sander is not going to be up to the task.
You are going to build an arrow spine tester to measure the spine of your arrow shafts to help your bow hunting, target shooting, and archery shooting in general.

If you build the dial indicator type, it will measure to within .001 of and inch, so the measurements to lay out the placement of the parts is critical. The yard stick will not do. You will need a high quality tape measurer or even better, a machinist ruler (which is what we use) that allows precise measurements to 1/64 of an inch (which is needed to build an arrow spine tester). We found great places to get just the right tools.

The holes that you will need to drill must be in the exact location and of the correct size. The cheap drill bits that most home shops contain are not true. They wobble and create a hole that is too large for the stated size.

The hand drill and many of the usual small drill presses also are not true and with the press spindle wobbling with a drill bit that wobbles makes for holes in the wrong place and too large for the precision needed. A quality tall drill press with a true set of drill bits is just the ticket to build an arrow spine tester.

For the Right Tools at the Right Price, Just Look Here!

The jig saw that most of us have is probably going to be ok if you have a way to fasten the work piece safely so that the jig saw can be used. Never try to hold small pieces by hand. A good quality band saw is much safer and easier to use especially if it has a miter guide and rip fence.

The orbital sander that we all have is handy, but it will not be able to provide the finishing touches to the tester if you are making most of it with wood.

You will need a good router and router table, preferably one with miter guides and rip fences that can closed in tight around the router bit.

If you do not have a very good router fence that can close the opening around the bit, you will likely ruin many pieces of wood learning to build an arrow spine tester.

A belt sander (both narrow and wide) is a necessity to finish the saw cuts for yokes and touching up the router work.
A wood lathe is also a nice tool to have for making decorative parts of your tester.

If you have not been frightened by all of the necessary tools and want to build your own spine tester, but would rather have some plans or instruction to follow, we have a great How To Build An Arrow Spine Tester CD.

If you do not have some or any of the tools talked about above to build an arrow spine tester, we have done some research and provide information on where to find great deals on these tools. Whether you need Power Tools or Hand Tools, these people can take care of you.

We have invested hundreds of $$$$$$ in tools to build our arrow spine testers. If you do not want to spend much money for tools or spend the time necessary to research and plan the project, perhaps one of our testers will save you a lot of time and money. Take A Look!

The next item that you need to build an arrow spine tester is time. How many times have you started a project only to find that it just takes more time than you have? Most of us have limited amounts of time to devote to projects such as this.
This project does take a considerably amount of time, so be aware of how much your time is worth and how much of it you are willing to devote to a project such as this.

Time spent on a project that is never finished may be time wasted, so be generous when allotting your time to this project even though some of us consider time spent like this is therapy and stress management, just like bow hunting.

The last item to consider when undertaking the project to build an arrow spine tester is money ($$$$$$). It is a fact of life that most of what we do today takes a certain amount of money. This project is no different. First class or Exotic wood, brass hardware, stainless steel bolts and screws, fancy finishes, quality tools, and big boy toys all take money.

Heck, we can even help with that problem. If you have knowledge to share or sell, or if you have wanted to sell a product on the internet and could not afford to have someone build a web site for you, just click on one of the links below to see how easy simple it is.
