A Bow Hunter Must Be Conscious Of Odor Control!
Personal hygiene and odor control is much more important to the bow hunter than to the rifle hunter.
Without consideration for this often over looked detail, the hunt is nothing more than a stroll in the woods.
You are not likely to be successful unless you are extremely lucky.
With so many products available today that "claim" to hide,
cover, or eliminate human and other
unwanted scents, there is no reason not to use something that will help you be a successful bow hunter.
We have found a reliable product that far exceeds their claims and well as our expectations.
Since finding this
product, we have ceased experimenting with others because it don't get no better than theses products.
Before we tell you what that product is and where to get it, we would like to explain the different types of odor control
and how they are used. That way, you can decide what you want to use and how to tackle the problem of personal hygiene
in the field.
Hide or Cover Scent
Anything that hides or covers your scent is a product
that is "stronger" and different than your scent. That can be a good or
that can be a bad way of odor control.
The GOOD is that covering your human and other unwanted scents is what you want to do to help your bow hunting
success.
The BAD is that if you use a cover scent to hide your scents, you may choose the wrong "flavor" and that is just as
fatal of a mistake as not doing anything about odor control at all.
Let us explain that. Ok, you get a deal on
"apple" flavored scent cover and spray it on everything you
wear and around your blind or stand.
If apples are not native to the area, the animals will be just as spooked as
by your personal scent. So, your deal on apple flavored spray is not a deal at all, unless you like apple and
will be using in your home.
What if you find a deal on red fox or skunk urine or something similar? The same situation as above
applies. Are there red fox or skunks in the area? If not, you have wasted your money and probably smell worse than
you did before using it.
Moral of the story is match the cover scent to the area you will be hunting in.
Lure scent is not for odor control. Although a buck or bull may over look your scent in the heat of the moment during
the rut, don't count on it.
A buck or bull coming to the smell of a doe or cow in heat, can be just as suspicious as one
outside the rut.
Scent Eliminators
As far as we are concerned, scent elimination is the way to go for odor control. That way the lure scent, if you
choose to use it, is more effective.
There are several brands and types of scent eliminators. Most of the companies
do not tell you what is in their products except for the ones that use "carbon". Carbon tends to be messy
and may put undesirable black smudges on your clothing. It's a personal decision as to use these products.
The special "suites" that profess to "lock" in your scent seem to be a great idea. This type of
clothing uses carbon that is securely held in place between the layers of the clothing.
The down side of this type
of odor control is the price. Some of these outfits are quite expensive and just another high tech toy to get the
hunter's money.
Our favorite products to use in odor control are made by the H. S. Scent company. These products include soap, shampoo,
and spray to eliminate human and other odors.
Since I started using these products, I have seen more animals come within
bow range than any other time in my life of 60+ years. Some in fact come too close
(see our page on blinds).
I have had to wave my arms to keep animals from walking over me.
We especially like and use often each day during our hunt, their product called "Scent-A-Way". This stuff is just a
spray that somehow eliminated the body odor from sweat and odors from ATV's.
Yep, we spray our ATV and all of our
gear with this stuff. Odor control and personal hygiene products can be obtained from the merchant sites below.
In addition to our daily bath, we shower with the H. S. Scent soap and shampoo our hair (hair holds odors like you would
not believe) immediately before going out to hunt.
That may mean up to 3 showers a day if the weather is warm, but
the pay off is worth it.
By the way, we use creek water for bathing and washing dishes. We will have a page or two
about how to do that soon. Just keep looking on the left for a button for the page.
In addition to the scent eliminating procedure, we use another product to extend the life and color of our camo
clothing. That product is called "Camo Restore".
For green or brown base color camo, this stuff actually bring back
some of the detail of the color when long term use has caused fading to occur.
This product is hard to find and you
may need to order it from the factory--Dixie Dye in Georgia. Phone 706 638-5751. If you call, please tell them
