We love bow hunting and we also love to watch birds, hummingbirds. These acrobatic and colorful rascals are
plentiful during bow season, but finding them may be a challenge if you do not know how to look for them.
If the hummingbird information that you seek is not on this page, please use our SEARCH feature. This allows you to find
information on our site if it is there.
In addition, this search feature also allows you to search the
entire Web to find the information you need. Just select the area that you want to explore (this site or
the Web). The search engine is by Google, the best in the business.
We hunt hard and long but seldom hunt very early in the morning. The reason is that all of the noise and lights
shinning around the country side only spook the deer, elk, and antelope.
They recognize that this activity is not
normal and they will just go deeper in to the brush or farther from the traveled roads and trails. For this
reason, we usually hang around camp until early afternoon.
With the time that we have in the mornings, we like to watch for hummingbirds and other wild life that comes along.
We like a comfortable camp and always take a large canopy cover (10 X 20 feet) to set up a outdoor kitchen, dinning,
and relaxation area.
With the sudden high winds that frequent the area that we hunt, it is necessary to secure
the frame of the canopy with several ropes and stakes driven into the ground.
These ropes and stakes can trip a person quite easily and it is especially dangerous for the grandkids. So, to
warn everyone about the ropes and stakes in the ground, we tie several pieces of surveyor ribbon on the ropes and
place PVC pipe over the protruding stakes.
There has been a terrible drought in the hunt area for the last 5 years and by hunting season, the vegetation is
dwindling very quickly. It turns out that the brightly colored surveyor ribbon simulate a freshly bloomed flower
and the hummingbirds are quick to notice.
Before using the ribbon we seldom saw hummingbirds, even when we put out
feeders that we carry.
The hummers like the red, yellow, green, and orange ribbon. They are so interested in the ribbons that they
completely ignore us. They frequently come within 2 feet and hover to try to get nectar from the ribbons.
Sometimes they even light on the ropes, some of which are yellow and some of which are red and white.
Using the ribbons is a fast and economical way to see if there are any hummingbirds in the area. The hummers will come
to the ribbons faster than to a feeder with colored water.
We have used this method to watch the birds for years
and have never been disappointed. Good luck in your bird watching and bow hunting.
An added bonus is the fact that butterflies also will come to the ribbons. We suggest that one of the Audubon Society's
on birds and butterflies be part of your hunting gear.
