Bow accessories include your bow, sight, rest, arrows, quiver, release, string keeper and any other items related to archery that helps you make the shot.

Your bow is probably the most expensive item in the group, but greater amounts of money spent on the bow does not guarantee tighter groups or more kills in the field.

Only a properly tuned bow, shooting the correct arrow, point, and fletching, by an archer using consistent and adequate form will produce consistent accuracy in spite of all of the bow accessories that you may have.

My wife, son, daughter-in-law, and I shoot bows that would be considered low end (as far as price) and unsatisfactory by many of the hunters that we see in the field. My bow including all of the bow accessories and a full quiver of hunting arrows cost about one-half of what a top of the line Hoyt, Browning, PSE, or Matthew's bows cost by themselves.

My bow was purchased second or third hand at a very modest cost (about $80). I tried different rests and sights until I found just the right combination for my style and ability.

That combination has not let me down for many years. Beside deer, elk and wild boar, my setup has provided several grouse, a coyote, a few squirrels, one wild dog, and 2 snakes over the years.

UPDATE! UPDATE!

For the 2006 season, I found a used Mathews Feather Lite and I have outfitted it with my favorite site, rest, and quiver. The price was right and the accuracy is superb.

Bow Types

When shopping for a bow, you need to decide what type of bow you will use. Will it be a compound, recurve, or long bow? What type of construction will it be? Will it be carbon, wood, fiberglass, aluminum, or a combination of some sort?

What is the pounds of pull needed for the hunting that you will do? Local laws often dictate a minimum strength of bow that can be used. If the bow is going to be a compound, how much let-off will you want (some laws also address this)?

Will it have one cam or two? What type of cam(s) will it have? Are there bow accessories available for the bow (this is not usually a problem)? Our solution was to get 1 or more of each over the years and practice, practice, practice. You will eventually find your dream bow(s) and live happily ever after.

For Compounds, Longbows, and Recurves we recommend a trip to the local pro shop and trying a Varity of setups to get a feel of what is available and how the different types fits you.

Yes, buying a bow and bow accessories is sort of like buying shoes, if they don't fit, you will not be comfortable and thus you will either not use (wear) the item, or you will not be successful when you use the item.

Once you have decided on the compound brand, model, style, pull poundage, and pull length, we recommend shopping around for the right price. If you like the pro shop's price, attitude, and selection of bows and bow accessories, then by all means deal with them.

You might even try the pawn shops in your area, there may be a deal hiding on the wall (usually not). If those methods do not work out or if you would rather save a lot of time and gas money, please try the sites below.

For used and sometimes new bows-- If you need it cheap or just can't find it anywhere else, find it here!

And a new place we found A Great Source of Archery Gear!

For LONGBOWS and long bow accessories, you may have to be more creative. It is not often that the pro shops stock long bows or the accessories for them. We became interested in long bows quite a while back but only after visiting the Mountain Man Rendezvous in Fort Bridger, Wyoming one year, did we purchase one.

There were several traders there with bows and we were able to talk to several venders as well as shooters. One fellow had won the bow shoot several years and was willing to share a lot of needed information.

It will be very helpful to pay heed to what some of the old timers have to say about long bows and long bow accessories.

On returning home from that trip, we "played" with our new toys and became interested in getting a little better bow and learning how to make our own wood arrows (that will be the subject of an later page or two).

After spending many hours searching on the internet for a bow that filled my want as well as fit my wallet, I finally found just what I wanted on an obscure auction deep inside one of the hundreds of archery sites on the web.

Some of the sites mentioned above do have a few long bows, but I wanted more of a custom design. I wanted one with cane backing and found one with cane both front and back. It was being sold by a the bowyer because the owner traded it in on a fancier model.

The bowyer is Joe Dupree of Elk Ridge Archery. If you contact him about building you a bow, please mention that Rufus of Archers-Friend recommended him. Joe also has a few bow accessories on his site.

If you have the urge to build your own long bow or recurve, we suggest Bingham Projects (801 399-3470). They have a very complete selection of kits, parts, and tools to build your own bow. Again, if you contact Bingham, please tell them Archers-Friend sent you.

There are other places out there that have long bows and custom made bows, we just do not have personal knowledge of their products and are reluctant to recommend them.

Arrows, Sights, and Quivers

Arrows, sights, and quivers are personal bow accessories that are fairly easy to find either on the internet or at the local sporting goods store. Be sure to consult an arrow spine chart and/or use a spine tester (we recommend the Archers-Friend Spine Tester ) in order to have a safe arrow to shoot in your bow.

Too light of a spine and the arrow may break and stick in your arm or other parts of your anatomy or a bystander's anatomy. Too heavy of a spine and you arrows will not be consistent in flight nor will they group well.

For a compound bow sight, we love the Trophy Ridge Flatliner and recommend it highly. The following web sites are excellent sources of bow accessories if you would like to save a few $$$$$ on gas.

And also the little place in Idaho -- Little store Big selection!

Then there is the site that has a lot of what you want some days and others not-- Hard to find accessories!

Rests

The last topic of this page is rests. It may be discussed last but it is just as important as the right bow and correct arrows. If all of your bow accessories do not compliment one another and work well together, there is trouble right here in bow city. We have tried several rests and we have decided on a couple that seem to be the cream of the crop.

I personally have been using a "fall away" by Trap Door. This rest is available from the above sites. By using the fall away type, there is absolutely no way that fletching contact with the rest can cause any problems. There is one problem with this rest that can be down right irritating.

The problem is that you arrow falls off the rest at really bad times. Times like when you torque the bow to clear a tree limb as you are watching that monster step into your shooting lane. The Trap Door has served me well in the last few years, but I am going to change this year to the ultimate fall away that I will tell you about in the next paragraph.

The rest of our gang uses a simple low cost rest that "holds" the arrow in place and is very durable and adjustable. This rest is called the "Stealth Hunter" and is simply the best rest we have ever seen and it was going to be my next rest until I saw the NEW fall away that these people have coming out this month (March 2004). The NEW rest is called the "Stealth Hunter Drop Rest". These rest are only available from the manufacturer as far as we can find out. The manufacturer is Inventive Technology in American Fork, Utah.

Their phone number is (801) 756-6017 and when you talk to Brent or Kent Roberts, tell them the Rufus and Donna of Archers-Friend sent you.

They have some other fantastic bow accessories also, but we will let the Roberts's boys tell you about their products. They travel a lot to promote their products, so you may need to leave your number for a return call.
