Learn to Find Bobcats While Bow Hunting

By knowing how to locate bobcats and taking a little time while bow hunting, you can enjoy watching the elusive animal (as well as other hard to find animals).

By looking over this site, you probably noticed that we are a family of bow hunters. As such, we tend to take more precautions while hunting to put ourselves in the best position to be successful.

These precautions include: scouting for the best spot to build a blind, paying attention to the water and food supply, the wind directions, and odor control.

When we are scouting, we especially look for a water source since we have had a drought for 5 years.

If there are not a lot of cattle and horses running in the area that you hunt, you can tell a great deal about your area from the tracks at the water hole. Bobcats, badgers, foxes, coyotes, wolves, wolverines, and many other hard to see animals will come to water on a regular basis and leave tracks.

By checking the tracks at the water hole for a few days and making a log of what you find, you will get a good idea of the kind of traffic to expect. We have found that animals do not make a habit of using the same water hole every day.

At least the smart ones do not and bobcats are some of the smartest. By checking each day for several days, you will get the best possible read of what is going on in the area.

We realize that spending several days scouting before hunting season is impossible for many people. We are just pointing out that your success will increase dramatically, if you do scout properly. Spotting cats and other hard to find animals is just a bonus for proper scouting, blind set up, and scent control.

Bobcats will sometimes show up early in the afternoon, especially if the weather is a little on the warm side. Be ready with you camera in easy reach.

have missed some great opportunities for pictures because of the extreme measures I go to to control my scent. I have in each of the last 3 years, had the cats come so close that I could not get a picture for fear of spooking the cat.

Check out our other pages about building blinds and odor control to see what we use and why. Last season, I was fortunate enough to have 2 bobcats within 10 yards on separate occasions.

One of the cats was the largest that I have ever seen and think that he could weigh around 45 pounds or more, now that is a large bobcat.

By using this simple method to scout, you too can enjoy watching bobcats and other hard to find critters while taking part in the wonderful art of bow hunting.

These pictures were taken during the 2004 Archery season. They were taken at less than 40 yards.

The cat later returned to less than 15 yards, but I was afraid that to grab my camera would spook him.

Many times, bobcats show up very late and without a tripod and the cats remaining completely still, there is no way to get a decent picture.
