Backpacks, Fanny Packs, and Hydration Control Devices

Bow hunters would be well advised to consider backpacks, fanny packs, and some type of hydration control as necessities for their hunting gear. These items come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and price range so there should be no reason not to have them.

BACKPACKS

If you are traveling mostly by foot, then your pack is your cargo hauler and must be able to carry all of your supplies for the duration of the outing. In addition, it will serve as the method to carry out your trophy if you are able to get one.

To accomplish this without causing great discomfort or damage to your body, your backpack should be of the proper style and size with plenty of padding for the shoulders and back.

It should also have a frame that is up to the task you expect of it. You may even want to purchase more than one. One for short trips or for horse or ATV use and one for the longer hikes.

Each person in our group has a backpack and uses it every day in the field whether we are hiking or taking the ATV to the hunting spot. We use the pack to protect our extra clothes, rain gear, binoculars, camera, snacks, and whatever else that we think that we may need for that day. A good waterproof backpack can save the day when those fast moving fall storms roll in.

Fanny Packs

Another necessity for the bow hunter is a fanny pack. This simple gadget could save your life in an emergency. We each have and use a fanny pack to carry a fire starting device, a candle, a whistle, a space blanket, strong string, any medicine that we take (I personally always carry an antihistamine for allergic reactions), surveyor tape (to mark blood trails or your way in heavy cover), a spare knife and folding saw, and surgical gloves for dressing the animal.

Great deals for fanny packs can be found on sites in the list below along with backpacks. The fanny pack is so light and comfortable, there is no reason not to have one. For the quick stalk, when there is not time to grab a backpack, the fanny packs are just the ticket.

Hydration Control Devices

Some type of hydration control is an absolute necessity, even in cool or cold weather. With all of the hiking and exercise that bow hunters get, it is easy to become dehydrated. We always carry 2 canteens on our ATV and 1 canteen on our fanny pack. In addition to water (nothing else is recommended) in the canteens, we also carry a filtration system on the ATV or in the backpacks. We use the Seychelle Bottom's Up bottle because it is small, fast, and reliable. It also has great filtering qualities. We also carry the iodine tablets in the fanny pack, just in case.

With the filter bottle, we are not the least bit afraid of using creek water in an emergency. The sites below will have several choices for filtering creek water and many more choices for hydration control devices. That is the high dollar word for canteen. I noticed in the news lately that the Federal Government is paying upwards of $100 per unit for the "hydration control devices" used in Middle East. I guess they think we tax payers would get very upset if they called a $100 device a canteen.
