Over the years we have seen many ATV Racks. Most of the stock racks that come on machines from the factory,
are not strong enough to do much more than hold a six pack or two. The racks were designed to be mostly "show"
and very little "go". The primary reason for this is to keep down the weight of the machine and
partly to try and keep us from over loading the ATV racks.
We as bow hunters, gun hunters, fishermen, and general outdoors people, usually end up asking too much from
our ATV racks. As a result, they fail. We very nearly had a catastrophic failure of a front rack. There was a
gun rack attached (according to the gun rack manufacturers instructions) to the front ATV rack of one of our
Suzuki's. The weld on the rack did not fail, but the metal in the rack itself, fatigued and broke. This allowed
the gun rack with 2 rifles to fall.
Had we been going fast or on a steep slope, there would surely have been hundreds of dollars worth of damage to
the firearms. We were lucky enough to have been going slow, so there was no damage other than mild scratches.
This convinced me that something had to be done to correct the short comings of our ATV racks.
Turn on your speakers and listen to what we have to say about ATV RACKS.
After returning home from the trip, we went to work thinking of some way to not only increase the holding
capacity in weight, but also holding capacity in volume. Below is what we came up with.
As you can see, the front ATV rack has increased in size by a good 75% or more and the strength is greatly
increased by adding the two braces down to the front bumper.
I used this bike and rack to haul a very nice
Mule Deer Buck over 25 miles from where he was taken with my bow, back to our camp. With the deer, my bow, and
all of the extra gear that I always carry, the ATV rack was holding more than double what the manufacturer's
rating allowed.
The bike was out of warranty, so I did not worry about that part. You should consider the warranty situation
should you decide to improve your ATV racks. The warranty would probably be voided if you "reconstruct" the
racks.
Personally, we think the racks should be build this strong to begin with, instead, the manufacturers seem to
be doing just the opposite. They are making the racks and bumpers weaker and weaker and in some cases, the
bumpers just are not there. Oh, well, that gives us and the after market people something to do to stay in
business.
Bow Racks / Gun Racks
The gun racks that most companies make, are not very good at holding your bow. Some do a fair job, but you
must keep a close eye on your equipment while going over rough terrain. We found a company that makes several
ATV racks, and does a better job of making guns, bows, and tools staying put than any other we have tried.
They use a "finned" system that is just the "cat's meow" for holding rifles, bows, and other things like
shovels and long handled objects. The brand we like is the IPI brand.
Not only do these ATV racks for bows and rifles hold the items securely, the items are not damaged by the
jiggling as you bounce along your merry way. These gun racks are great for compound bows, recurves and longbows if
you have a wide trail, but we still use extra braces to stabilize the racks.
We do not want a rack failure to
ruin a hunt or an outing, so the extra brace as seen in the picture is well worth your time and effort.
The IPI folks even have an ATV rack for a bow that will accommodate a "strung" LongBow if you mount it correctly. The model is "IPI bow Grip Pro"(tm).
We are here to help inform the archer and bow hunter of these things. With a little
thinking, you should be able to mount this bow rack on your ATV in a manner that even with it strung, you can carry
it without hanging on brush.
Please note that I got into too much of a hurry and did not think ahead. I placed the ATV rack for the
longbow so that the feathers on the arrows face forward. This is not good. I will remount the rack so
that the feathers are facing backward.
This will keep from accidentally catching on a bush and tearing
the feather. Also note, some states do not allow the bow to be carried strung.
Go Here and put IPI in the "Brand Search Box" to find all of the IPI racks at this site.
