The Dial Indicator type of Spine Tester, measures the precise deflection (to .001 of an inch) of the shaft with a weight placed on the middle of the shaft between supports. This deflection amount is compared with a result from a mathematical formula to give the archer the safe poundage or pull weight that can be delivered from a bow to the shaft. Until now, we have not seen a commercially available dial indicator type of spine tester. The Protractor type of spine testers, transfers the deflection in the shaft from a weight placed on it to a pointer that in turn is calibrated to reflect the angle that the pointer is making to the starting point. This calibration is subject to errors depending on how accurate the zero point and the markings on the scale are. The scale then reports the safe poundage that the shaft can take. Some of the commercial protractor types are quite pricey to our way of thinking.The protractor types also take up a lot of space and since they are usually quite large, they are difficult to store. The Archers-Friend Dial Indicator Arrow Spine Tester, is accurate, affordable, and beautiful. Using an accurate spine tester is the only way to tell what the true spine of a shaft is. This is especially true of wood shafts, and in some cases, the aluminums measure to be different than what the markings indicate. Using an accurate spine tester will eliminate one variable in your shooting by allowing you to separate the shafts into groups of similar spine weight. You will also know the safe bow weight that the shaft can handle to keep you from shooting too light of a shaft from your bow.
