Adjust Your Arrow Length As A Tuning Tool!

There is sometimes great confusion about proper arrow length and what effect it can have on the accuracy of your bow shooting.

First off, you need to know your arrow length or pull length. This will depend on the length of your arms, your anchor point, and whether you use a release aid or fingers. You should also consider whether you use an overdraw or not.

Knowing the above, you can choose a bow that has a range that is suitable for your pull, then you can begin to choose arrow spines that will fit your needs OR CAN YOU?

Spine testers, even the Archers-Friend Spine Testers , measure the static spine of the arrow shaft. In reality, your bow will choose to use dynamic spine to decide what arrow length, weight, point weight, feather or vane type, and any other variable that is necessary to achieve good accuracy.

Notice that I said (your bow chooses), but it is also your style or form that helps decide. Your bow also has a pounds of pull rating along with the arrow length recommendation. This is baseline information and gives you a starting place.

Since we do not know of any way to calculate the dynamic spine necessary for a particular bow and arrow combination, we use the manufacturer's information and the spine tester to get the length and static spine of the shaft.

Then, to determine the dynamic spine, we build arrows and shoot them.
We then make small adjustments to the arrow length, or point weight, or feathers or vanes to fine tune the arrow for the best accuracy. THIS IS THE DYNAMIC SPINE THAT OUR BOW IS LOOKING FOR.

We have been experimenting with another way to find the dynamic spine. It is called bare shaft testing and we have made several pictures to show how it works. Look and enjoy.

How To Adjust Arrow Length or Point Weight

Here is some generally accepted rules to go by when fine tuning your arrows for your bow:
First you need to understand about spine ratings or poundage recommendations. Say a bow or an arrow shaft is rated for 50-60 pounds. It is generally accepted that this means AN ARROW LENGTH OF 28 INCHES WITH A 125 GRAIN POINT.

If you shoot an arrow longer than 28 inches, then the arrow will react like a shaft with a lighter spine.
If you shoot an arrow length shorter than 28 inches, then the arrow will react like a shaft with a stiffer spine.

If you shoot an arrow with a point heavier than 125 grains, the arrow will react like a shaft with a lighter spine.
If you shoot an arrow with a point lighter than 125 grains, the arrow will react like a shaft with a heavier spine.

For each inch you change the arrow length from the 28 inch standard, you change the dynamic spine by about 5 pounds (I have seen 3 to 5 in various publications, so take your pick as this is a small adjustment).

For each 25 grains that you change the arrow point from the 125 grain standard, you change the dynamic spine by about 5 pounds.

By using the above guidelines, you should be able to fine tune your arrow length for the best possible accuracy.

WARNING--BE CAREFUL!!

1. No matter what, you just can not shoot an arrow shorter than your pull length unless you are using the proper over draw and some states have length restrictions for hunting!

2. Overly long arrows may not be practical!
